Soldier accused of detainee abuse acquitted of all charges

Mr. Cassara represented a soldier accused at court-martial of abusing a number of detainees at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.  Several soldiers stated they saw the soldier abuse detainees, and one detainee, who gave a deposition at Guantanamo Bay Cuba, testified in great detail to the abuse he allegedly suffered at the client’s hands.  The client maintained his innocence. His military defense attorney attempted to get him to plead guilty, but the client refused, saying he would not plead to what he had not done.

Weeks before the trial was set to begin, Mr. Cassara uncovered classified documents revealing the detainees story could not be true.  After a three day trial at Fort Bliss, Texas, the court-martial panel took 15 minutes to acquit the soldier of all charges. The story of this case was featured in an academy award winning film, “Taxi to The Dark Side.”  See the media page for more information about this case.
